Top 7 Most Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use Evivo with Formula?

Evivo is safe to use with either breast milk or formula.  Evivo works best for breastfed or mix-fed babies that are receiving some amount of human milk.

What age can I start feeding Evivo?

You can start feeding your baby Evivo immediately once they begin consuming human milk.

Will my toddler benefit from Evivo?

While our clinical research studies focused on babies receiving human milk, all babies that are receiving at least some human milk can benefit from receiving Evivo.

How do I store Evivo?

We recommend placing Evivo in the freezer and use 1 sachet per day to ensure it can be used up to the best by date.

What is in Evivo?

Evivo is manufactured at a GMP facility in the USA, is gluten-free and non-GMO. Evivo contains no flavor additives, dyes, or preservatives.

The probiotic strain in Evivo is Bifidobacterium longum subsp. infantis EVC001. On its own, this active ingredient is about 1/5th the size of a pea each serving, so it requires something to give it substance for packaging and feeding purposes. For this reason, lactose, the only natural sugar found in human milk, is added. Lactose is what makes human milk taste slightly sweet as well as being a key nutrient in both human milk and several infant formulas.

Evivo has only two ingredients: lactose and B. infantis EVC001. The lactose in a single serving of Evivo, however, is less than the lactose in one tablespoon of human milk.

Is Evivo FDA approved and what is the regulatory approval process?

Evivo is a Food for Special Dietary Use, manufactured in the USA, and meets all FDA regulations for food products. Additionally, within the FDA, the Office of Food Additive Safety oversees a process called GRAS status for many types of products, including Evivo. These products must complete an extensive process of scientific and data review by independent qualified experts, who are assessing whether the product is safe under the conditions of its intended use. Evivo gained GRAS status for use with both term and preterm infants after successfully completing this process, with consensus by all independent qualified experts.

Does Evivo contain dairy or soy?

Evivo contains lactose derived from dairy. Lactose is the carbohydrate portion of milk. Lactose is naturally present in human milk, which is why we chose to use it in Evivo.

The milk protein and other components are separated to produce high-purity lactose. When making Evivo, one of the components of the fermentation media contains broken pieces of soy and casein (peptides). These peptides are consumed by the bacteria when growing. At the end of the process, the media is discarded.

We do not expect any intact milk protein, soy or casein protein in the final product but cannot guarantee it. We recommend you talk to your pediatrician to determine if Evivo is suitable for your baby.

Feeding questions

Can you ensure that Evivo is free of contaminants?

We perform a comprehensive testing program using the latest technology on every lot of Evivo to ensure our products are of potentially harmful bacteria and heavy metals. Each manufactured lot includes a Certificate of Analysis (certifying that meets rigorous testing standards). We have strict ingredient specifications and only source high-quality ingredients from reputable vendors.

How is Evivo different from other Probiotics?
Evivo contains B. infantis, a natural infant-specific strain that has evolved with humans for millions of years to work with human milk. Because of these characteristics Evivo provides superior colonization.  When combined with human milk, Evivo works by favorably changing gut biochemistry to reduce potentially harmful bacteria and intestinal inflammation, both of which have been linked to increased risk of short-and-long-term health problems. The combination of Evivo and human milk creates a protective infant gut environment, creating a foundation for good health.
Can I take Evivo and pass it on to my baby?

We do not currently have any data to support Evivo colonizes mom and is able to be passed on to baby during birth. All current studies have been conducted feeding babies directly with Evivo.

What does Evivo taste like?

As you open a sachet of Evivo, you may notice it has a mild scent. This smell is normal due to the natural fermentation of the good bacteria in Evivo. Everyone's sensory experience is different, and the scent of the product varies from person to person.

Evivo has a very mild taste. Once mixed, it takes on the flavor of the milk or formula. Adding more milk or formula may provide a milder taste.

Can I heat my breast milk and then add Evivo?

Evivo can be added after warming the human milk. Evivo should not be heated directly.

Can I start Evivo my baby's first day of life?

Feeding Evivo and human milk during the earliest stages of life is important and you can start the minute your baby begins consuming human milk. We believe the greatest chance to impact your child's gut microbiome begins early from birth.

How do I mix Evivo and give it to my baby? How do I know when it is mixed to the right consistency?

For parents, it's important to know that feeding your baby Evivo is a straightforward process. There are different ways to give Evivo to your baby, what's most important is finding a feeding method that works best for you and your baby. Please refer to the instructions for use guide for recommended feeding methods.

*for newborns or infants who cannot tolerate a 3 - 5 ml volume in one feeding, consider making a thin paste with Evivo powder using a small amount of breastmilk and use a finger to feed directly to baby or apply to the nipple during feeding.

What changes should I expect in my baby’s poop or GI system when taking Evivo?

For parents, it's important to know that while taking Evivo, some babies may experience a decrease in bowel movements or go several days without having a bowel movement. This is a normal result of the gut microbiome being reshaped and a sign that more nutrients are being absorbed.

It may take your baby a few days to adjust to the changes in their diet. It's worth noting that not all babies need a change in their bowel movements to indicate Evivo is working. If your baby is receiving Evivo and human milk daily, Evivo is working.

Talk to your pediatrician about whether Evivo is appropriate for your baby.  Also, be sure to speak with your pediatrician if your baby shows signs of distress that appear to be associated with a reduction of bowel movements.

Can I use breast milk that has been in my freezer, or does it need to be freshly pumped?

You can add Evivo to thawed or freshly pumped human milk. If you do heat human milk, only add the Evivo after heating.

Product questions

What do I do if my baby missed a serving of Evivo?
What is the recommended serving of Evivo?

Once a day, every day, give your baby the recommended serving of 1 sachet of Evivo mixed with human milk or formula.

Is there a best time of day to feed my baby Evivo?

Evivo can be fed to baby any time of day. We recommend feeding Evivo just before baby's feeding time but encourage you to choose a feeding schedule that best fits your family lifestyle.

How does Evivo work with human milk?

Human milk is a marvel that provides your baby with the nutrients it needs. One of these, a seemingly undigestible nutrient called Human Milk Oligosaccharides (HMOs), is key to healthy development.

Evivo contains B. infantis EVC001, which facilitates HMO digestion. This relationship can support healthy gut and immune function in your baby.

What if my baby spits up their Evivo, should I give another serving?

You do not need to re-serve Evivo in the same day if your baby spits up. We recommend waiting until it is time for the next serving. Evivo continues to colonize the human gut after each feeding, so baby has protection in between feedings.

If baby continues to spit up while being fed Evivo, we recommend trying a different feeding method. Please refer to our instructions for use for feeding recommendations.

Can I bottle feed with Evivo?

If your baby finishes an entire bottle during a single feeding, this feeding method may be best for them. Note that if your baby doesn't finish the bottle, we recommend throwing away the leftovers after 30 minutes.

My baby has started to transition to solid food. Should I still use Evivo?

As long your baby is still consuming human milk, they can continue to benefit from receiving Evivo. It can help protect your baby during the transition to solids.

Does it matter if my baby was born vaginally or via cesarean?

No, it does not matter if your baby was born vaginally or via cesarean. Regardless of delivery method, recent research indicates that 90% of babies in the U.S. are missing B. infantis  potentially due to modern birthing and feeding practices.

Should I continue Evivo if I have returned to work and stopped breastfeeding?

As long as your baby is receiving some human milk, you can continue feeding Evivo once a day, every day. Evivo can play a critical role in safeguarding your baby against the overgrowth of potentially bad gut bacteria.

Can I combine Evivo with other probiotics?

Research on the gut microbiome has led to the identification of hundreds of types of bacteria, some of which are sold as probiotics for your baby.   However, not all products work the same. It is important to choose the right probiotic to help restore the good bacteria to your baby’s gut.

Evivo can be combined with other probiotics. Only Evivo contains B. infantis EVC001, the bacterial strain shown to work with human milk to help establish a healthy gut microbiome.

What happens if I stop giving Evivo to my baby?

We encourage you to use Evivo during the first 6 months for baby to help maintain levels of B. infantis. The combination of human milk and high levels of B. infantis EVC001 has been shown to reduce bad bacteria that can cause inflammation linked to potential health issues such as allergies and other autoimmune diseases. B. infantis levels are expected to drop naturally over time when your infant has transitioned to solid foods and the bulk of their diet is no longer human milk.

It's worth noting that not all babies need a change in their bowel movements to indicate Evivo is working. If your baby is receiving Evivo and human milk daily, Evivo is working. We recommend you take this information to your pediatrician, to determine if Evivo is suitable for your baby.

If I am taking another probiotic with B. infantis and breastfeeding. Aren’t I already transferring B. infantis?

90% of babies in the U.S. are missing B. infantis. Recent research published in Scientific Reports suggests that there has been a generational loss in B. infantis potentially due to modern birthing and feeding practices.

Only Evivo contains B. infantis EVC001, the bacterial strain shown to work with human milk to help establish a healthy gut microbiome, lower inflammation, and help guide the immune system.

I’ve been told that breast milk is the only thing my baby needs. Why does my baby need Evivo?

Human milk provides the necessary nutrients for your baby's growth and development. One of these, a seemingly undigestible nutrient called Human Milk Oligosaccharides (HMOs), is key to healthy development. Evivo contains B. infantis EVC001, which facilitates HMO digestion, supporting your baby to healthy immune system function.

It is not uncommon for infants to lack the B. infantis bacteria in their gut microbiome.  Evivo is a probiotic that aims to restore the natural state of the infant gut microbiome by introducing the B. infantis bacteria. This bacterium effectively utilizes HMOs in human milk that would otherwise go unused, ensuring that your baby receives more nutrients.

When my product was delivered the ice packs had melted and the product wasn’t cool to the touch. Is it safe to use?

We formulate the product to withstand some variations in temperature that may be associated with shipping delays and expect that it will still have 8 billion CFUs (Colony Forming Units) by the Best if Used By Date on your package. The included ice pack is intended to prevent extreme temperature spiking while in transit.

Each sachet of Evivo is specially packed and sealed in an airtight sachet that protects the live bacteria by keeping out air, moisture, and light.  Our recommendation for freezer storage is intended to ensure the product maintains at least 8 billion CFUs of the beneficial bacteria until the Best if Used By Date on your package.

It is best to store Evivo in the freezer and use 1 sachet per day.

What is the Best if Used By Date that is printed on all Evivo packets?

The Best if Used By Date is our determination of when the product should be used to ensure that it is at its best quality, particularly as it relates to the number of live B. infantis in the packet.

If Evivo is past the Best if Used By Date, does this mean that my baby shouldn’t consume the product?

The Best if Used By Date reflects when the product will be at its best quality and is not an indicator of safety.  If stored properly, Evivo should be safe and of good quality past its Best if Used By Date.
